Prof. Barry J. Marshall of the University of Western Australia (Australia) won the Nobel Prize in the field of Physiology and Medicine in 2005 for his discovery of Helicobacter pylori.

Prof. Marshall visited Shiga and gave a lecture organized by Prof. Takanori Hattori in cooperation with the SUMS Citizen Lecture Series, and it was attended by many Otsu citizens and by our third-year medical students. For the latter, it was a part of their “Medical English” class activities. They very much enjoyed the lecture and the video clip of the actual Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm.
