On January 11, 2012, an annual social gathering “the Evening for International Exchange” was held at the Student Center Cafeteria. A total of more than 90 people got together, including our international students and researchers, and their families, the delegates from supporting organizations, local volunteers, and SUMS staff members. It was a great opportunity to develop close friendships among the participants.
A researcher from the University of Ottawa (Canada) through the SUMS Project made an interesting presentation of her home country, and students from Kenya and China sang songs. Their wonderful performances attracted all participants and brought a sense of togetherness.
On the center table, some traditional dishes made by the researchers and their spouses from Egypt, Viet Nam and Indonesia were offered as well as Japanese dishes. Also, photos of “SUMS’ excursions for the international students/researchers “taken by participants and the shots of members dressed in kimono at the monthly Japanese culture class were exhibited. Many people looked at them with interest.
At the end of the party, all participants sang “Fujisan (Mt.Fuji)” and “Biwako Shuukoo no Uta (Lake Biwa Boat Cruising Song)” together to the accompaniment of members of the SUMS Student Orchestra in a friendly atmosphere. It was a really enjoyable evening.
