Excursion for Overseas Students and Researchers in 2012

On November 2 and 3, 2012, an excursion to Awaji Island and Naruto for overseas students, researchers and their families was held. Its theme was “Appreciate famous paintings and learn about earthquake disasters!”
A total of 27 people participated into this bus tour, led by Vice-president Hattori and Professor Aiura: Director of the International Liaison Office.

On the first day, they visited “Uzu-no-Michi”, the ocean promenade constructed along the girders of the Ohnaruto Bridge, to look down at the dynamic whirlpools. They experienced the thrilling views through the glass floors of the promenade 45-meter above the sea.
After that, they visited Otsuka Museum of Art, which was the main destination of this excursion. This museum displays more than one thousand replicas of masterpieces of Western Art from ancient murals to modern paintings that have been reproduced in their original colors and sizes on large ceramic boards. They appreciated the great artistic works and the special techniques to reproduce them. They enjoyed perfect timing for viewing the exhibition, as autumn is considered the best season for art.
At the gathering after dinner, they sang Japanese songs together which had been introduced to the participants on the way in the bus: “Momiji” [autumnal leaves], “Furusato” [home town/country] and “Hana wa saku” [Flowers are blooming.] (a theme song for post-earthquake reconstruction), and some students accompanied them with solos. Everyone enjoyed this convivial party.

On the second day, they visited “Awaji Hanasajiki,” flower fields extending on the gently-sloping hill in the north of the island. The panoramic view of seasonal flower carpets with sea in the background was relaxing and refreshing.
Finally, they visited Nojima Fault Preservation Museum. They could see the huge seismic power and natural threats of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and experience a level 7 earthquake. It was a great opportunity to learn and think about major earthquakes.

Blessed with good weather during this excursion, all participants could forget about their busy daily lives, and open their mind to each other and enjoy themselves.
