Admission to the Undergraduate School of Medicine |

|
The Undergraduate School of Medicine consists of the
Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Nursing. The time of admission for both
faculties is at the beginning of each academic year (April). Since classes are
conducted in Japanese, mastery of Japanese language is essential for admission.

1. Objectives |
|
In this faculty students are trained to be well-educated physicians and prospective medical researchers, who have a broad range of culture, the essential knowledge and capabilities in medical science, a high sense of medical ethics and the spirit of scientific inquiry.
The goal of the faculty is to contribute to the development of medical science
and the improvement of the quality of medical services through the medical education,
research and treatment. |

2. Educational Policy |
|
In general education, students learn the fundamental studies for medical science in order to develop with a broad range of culture and knowledge and to build a well-rounded character. And next, in medical science education, students learn the basic studies of medicine such as the structures, functions of the human body and Pathophysiology, social medicine and so on, and subsequently clinical medicine. We give the six-year integrated education where students can master the subjects interrelatedly step by step.
The Bachelor's degree is awarded to students who have completed the required
six-year curriculum. |

1. Objectives |
|
In this faculty, students develop with the versatile
knowledge regarding the relation between human life and health, and train them
to be nursing workers who support human health from a broader perspective, and
prospective educators or researchers of the nursing science. The goal of the
faculty is to contribute to nation's health and welfare through a nursing education,
research and practice.

2. Educational
Policy |
|
The curriculum is based on three concepts: A human being and eviroment, A human being and human relation,
Human Life activity. Special subjects are taught in the first year as well as
general subjects.
SUMS places great importance on practical education, since
the theoretical concept of nursing should be integrated with the practice. Students
develop with the capability of independent learning by means of active studies
in small groups.
The Bachelor's degree (Nursing) is awarded to the students who
have completed the required four-year curriculum. |

Applicants for admission to the Undergraduate School must satisfy one of the following conditions, or must be expected to satisfy one of them by March 31st of the academic year from a university. (contact SUMS admissions office for details)

Graduation from a senior high school |
(2) |
Completion of twelve years of school education |
(3) |
Recognition for having academic abilities equivalent or superior to a senior high school graduate pursuant to Enforcement Ordinance of the School Education Law (expect for some provisions) |

No special selection can be made for foreign students.
Foreign applicants must take the same entrance examinations as are given to Japanese
applicants. Therefore, every applicant must take the tests of National Center
for University Entrance Examinations and the second-stage entrance examinations
of Shiga University of Medical Science.
