2. Hospitals, etc. (in case of emergency)
 

If you become sick while the hospital is closed, phone the following numbers. Make sure you say that you are a foreign student, and take the certificate for national health insurance (Kenko-Hoken-sho) with you. Emergency telephone number 548-2770, 2771 (Hospital Affairs Division), Byoin-Iji-Tochoku-shitsu".

3. Telephones
 
(1) Public Telephones
  Within the city area (telephone code 077-) you can talk for approximately 1 minute for 10 yen. If you talk longer than three minutes or call long distance, the phone call will automatically be cut off unless you insert more coins or a telephone card. Telephone cards are available at the store and from vending machines in the hospital.
(2) International Telephone Calls
  Direct Calls: 001 + Country Code + Area Code + Phone Number Operator Calls: dial 0051 (without any prefix) for assistance. International Directory Enquiries : 0057

4. Telegrams (Denpo)
 
(1) Domestic Telegrams
  Telegrams can be sent at the telegraph and telephone office (NTT).
Dial 115 (without any prefix)
The rate is charged according to the number of letters (in "katakana') used in the telegram.
(2) International Telegram
  Ask for details about international telegrams and telexes at the international telegraph and telephone office "KDD' (03-3344-5151).

5. Banks
 

Japanese government scholarships, and the housing and medical fee reimbursement are all transferred into the individual's bank account. You are all requested to open an account after your entrance to the university.

Because some means of identification is necessary to go through the formalities for opening a bank account, you should take with you personal identification (Certificate of Alien Registration, Student I.D. Card, Passport).

Banks also manage such affairs as payment of water, gas and health insurance fees, as well as deposits (savings), and remittances. At some banks, foreign currency can be exchanged for Japanese yen. Exchangeable currency varies with banks.

The following are the authorized foreign exchange banks of this area.
